Intense cravings for junk food seem to be an almost daily occurrence for many of us. Science now has revealed that we get cravings because our body is in need of minerals that are present in junk food but would be much healthier for us if we got them from other, more whole, foods. Oftentimes, we are unaware of the potential connection between the two. Do you tend to crave specific junk foods on a regular basis? And do you still desire these foods even after eating them? Consider the following tips to determine if the food cravings are related to mineral deficiencies.

Chocolate Craving

Chocolate is the most widely craved food in the world. It is also actually linked to a nutrient many of us are deficient in magnesium. Research studies revealed the connection between the deficiency and craving. Try eating magnesium rich foods like spinach, broccoli, almonds, okra and sunflower seeds to eliminate the craving.

Sugar Craving

It’s no surprise that sugary foods are also among the most highly craved in the world. Deficiencies in five nutrients could be to blame if you find yourself craving them. Chromium, sulfur and tryptophan are among them, the latter being a serotonin (happy brain chemical) regulator. Due to the amount of mineral deficiencies from a sugar craving might suggest, you probably want to look at revitalizing your diet to restore your body’s mineral balance. Try including foods to tame the desire for sugar, broccoli, sweet potatoes, cranberries, raisins, eggs, liver, and poultry.

Soda Craving

If you crave sodas or carbonated drinks you may be low in calcium. Try including the following foods in the diet which are rich in calcium like sesame seeds, spinach, collard greens, kelp, broccoli and swiss chard.

Ice Craving

If you are craving ice than you are most likely deficient in iron. Eat more iron-rich foods like leafy greens, meat, blackstrap molasses, Brussel sprouts, and sea vegetables.

High Fat Foods Craving

If you crave foods like fries, cheese and the like with high oil and fat content, it could be indicative of a calcium deficiency. Consider instead drinking raw milk or eating turnip greens, oranges, papaya, almonds and broccoli.

Salty Foods Craving

Individuals who consistently crave salty foods are probably low in chloride. When you find yourself reaching for that bag of chips or popcorn, reach instead for fish, nuts and seeds. These are healthy ways to gain the chloride or silicon your body is telling you it wants.

Bread Craving

This can signal a deficiency in nitrogen which can result in overall malnourishment. As such, if you find yourself craving lots of carbs, consider adding seafood to your diet, fish contain a lot of the mineral nitrogen.

Science now understands that these cravings are a sign that your body needs certain minerals that can be found in unhealthy foods but are best acquired from whole foods. Indeed, only by acquiring minerals from natural sources, in which all nutrients are optimized for superior absorption, can we hope to finally end the cravings that plague our lives.
