Recently experts from several countries were asked to review the possible health advantages of organic food. A report prepared for the European Parliament, co-authored by Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s Philippe Grandjean, adjunct professor of environmental health, outlined the health benefits of eating organic food and practicing organic agriculture. Besides air, water and shelter the fourth basic human essential is food. Today the world is faced with a food conundrum that may have been unforeseen a century ago. It stems from the fact that crops for human consumption aren’t grown for optimal health as much as they are to be more easily produced. The most pressing concern regarding conventionally grown food is the use of pesticides, which are still detectable even after being washed. In comparison, organic foods are generally pesticide-free.

Pesticide Residue Risk and Food Safety

Authorities in both the European Union and the United States are adamant that the pesticides on produce, as well as the amounts used are perfectly safe, the limits are based on animal studies and scrutinized one pesticide at t a time. The Harvard report says that is a problem and they list the some reasons. The human brain is much more complex than the rat brain, and our brain development is much more vulnerable because there are so many processes that have to happen at the right time and in the right sequence. The dangers of antibiotic usage in farm animals were also addressed. The prevalent use of antibiotics in conventional animal production is a key driver of antibiotic resistance. The prevention of animal disease and more restrictive use of antibiotics, as practiced in organic production, could minimize the risk, with potentially considerable benefits for public health.

Pesticides Are Harming Children’s Brains

Grandjean, a Danish-born researcher who travels around the world studying delayed effects of chemical exposure on children replied recommends that pregnant women eat organic produce because that’s the best way of preventing exposure to pesticides. She estimates that there are many pesticides on the market, and  they have the potential to damage a developing nervous systems. 

Conventional Farming May Promote Antibiotic Resistance

The development of antibiotic resistance in bacteria contributes to the spread of resistance in animals and humans. On organic farms antibiotic use is restricted. Animals are given more spaces to roam in natural conditions, hence the emphasis on pasturing animals to lower infection risks, prevent disease and minimize antibiotic resistance. Farm workers are at great risk to the pesticides, it seeps into their clothing and they carry it home to their families. Populations living in areas where pesticides are frequently used are also at risk, and pregnant farm workers expose their unborn babies to pesticides.

What Constitutes Organic?

Organic farming can be defined as an integrated farming system that strives for sustainability, the enhancement of soil fertility and biological diversity whilst, with rare exceptions, prohibiting synthetic pesticides, antibiotics, synthetic fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, and growth hormones. The U.S. Department of Agriculture states that organic farming emphasizes the use of renewable resources and conserving soil and water in food production. Produce can’t be labeled “organic” until a government-approved certification ensures that the farmer is following USDA organic standards. Companies handling or processing organic food must also be certified before they are shipped to supermarkets or restaurants.

Hope and Change

If the European Parliament does take action, It could influence practices also in the U.S. There is a lot of exchange of foods between the European Union and the U.S. Clearly, if the EU is going to favor organic products more in the future, that will open up an opportunity for U.S. producers of organic foods. And vice versa, if more products become available from EU farmers that are organic, that could be attractive to U.S. consumers. And perhaps the joint effect of that could be that organic farming, both in Europe and in the U.S., would become more sustainable economically as well as environmentally. One way to begin the process might be for lawmakers to support additional research and learn for themselves how organic foods would benefit the U. S. as a whole.
