Diatomaceous means “full of diatoms” (single-celled honeycomb structured algae organisms encased in silicon exoskeletons). Diatomaceous Earth focuses on the future and power of this fine microscopic-algae that can help people, pets, plants and the planet (also must-have votes for going green with prominent practical uses in homes, gardens, animals, birds, grains, kennels, farms, crops, orchards, buildings and environment) in the pursuit of natural healthy living. Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring product that is mined out of old lakebeds. It’s completely organic and safe to use around family and pets. When choosing diatomaceous earth make sure that you only use the organic food grade variety that is naturally milled, unheated, non crystalline silicon diode. The following is a few uses for Diatomaceous Earth…
Eating Diatomaceous Earth
Food grade diatomaceous earth (DE) is a gentle abrasive that’s also highly absorbent. DE is almost entirely made of silica, an important component of human ligaments, cartilage, and musculature. This unique resume makes DE one of the cheapest and most versatile health products on the market. Potential benefits include healthier hair, nails, skin, lowering blood pressure and cholesterol.
This is probably the most common use of De. Use to eliminate crawling insects around your home. Diatomaceous earth comes in the form of a chalky powder, and is the natural fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of hard shelled algae. Diatom particles are very small and sharp, but only harmful to the small exoskeletons of insects. Insects cannot become immune to its action, as it is a mechanical killer not a chemical one. Because it is a light dust diatomaceous earth easily clings to the bodies of insects as they crawl over it. The diatoms particles then cut into the waxy coats of insects and they dry out and die of dehydration within 48 hours. Dust inside and outside of your home to repel and kill insects.
Diatomaceous earth can be directly applied to your dog or cat to get rid of fleas. Thoroughly dust floor carpets and bedding and around pet’s sleeping areas, as well as surrounding baseboards, cracks and crevices. Try not to get DE into your pet’s ears or eyes. Apply diatomaceous earth with your hand and place it on the animal’s skin.
Add diatomaceous earth to your pet’s food as a de-wormer.. Dosing or Dogs and Cats. Because food-grade DE is not a toxic agent, it is very safe to use in the recommend dosage for worming pets, even very young puppies and kittens. The following can be given once or twice daily:
- Puppies and dogs weighing less than 10 pounds: .5 to 1 teaspoon.
- Puppies and dogs weighing 11 to 19 pounds: 2 teaspoons
- Puppies and dogs weighing 20 to 50 pounds: 1 to 1.5 tablespoons
- Puppies and dogs weighing 51 to 100 pounds: 2 tablespoons
- Puppies and dogs weighing over 100 pounds: 3 to 4 tablespoons
- Kittens: .5 to 1 teaspoon
- Cats: 2 teaspoons
An article by the University of Minnesota states that almost all dry food is susceptible to a beetle infestation. Diatomaceous earth protects food from infestations and keeps food dry which prevents food from clumping, germination, or going moldy. If you have grain, legumes, beans, rice or corn in storage then adding DE works well to keep it protected and dry.
Add to Toothpaste
You can add a pinch of diatomaceous earth to your toothpaste before you brush in the morning. Many types of toothpaste already use diatomaceous earth as an ingredient because it is a mild abrasive. You will be surprised at how clean your teeth feel afterwards.
No matter what you are looking into for improving your health, it’s important that there are safe and natural options like diatomaceous earth. DE can be used to help promote healthy skin as an exfoliate that is able to remove microscopic deposits of dirt, oils, and dead skin cells.
There are many ways to deodorize with diatomaceous earth. Sprinkle DE on the bottom of garbage cans. Add diatomaceous earth to your cat’s litter box. Dust the bottom of each shoe and let sit overnight for smelly footwear. Dust your carpets with diatomaceous earth after you vacuum and leave it for 12 to 24 hours to absorb carpet odor.
